Dear Dr. Becker,
I am writing to thank you
for the innovation in wound care that you developed and I experienced over the
past five weeks. I injured my right
thumb and left little finger in a cooking accident on Saturday,
January 21, 2006. While preparing food, I sliced off the tip of
the little finger and a diagonal portion of
my thumb and thumb nail. Due to
the nature of the wounds, I went to Condell Medical Center’s Emergency Room for treatment to stop the
bleeding. While in their care I was told
that I would probably experience a loss of feeling in both digits and that my
thumb would be somewhat disfigured. It
was my good fortune that you were the on-call orthopedic physician that day as
I was referred to your office for follow-up wound care.
Your innovative approach to
wound care has amazed me over these last five weeks. While inspecting the wounds on my initial
visit, you removed the gel foam packing that was applied by the emergency room
staff. Your approach was to treat my
wounds in a dry and anaerobic environment with silver sulfadiazine
ointment. During the next four weeks
with each follow-up visit I observed my wounds healing without scabbing and
literally returned to their original shape.
I witnessed first hand fat tissue, followed by skin, emerge over the
wounds. I have experienced no loss of
sensation in either digit and both fingers look and behave like they did prior
to the accident.
Instead of living the rest
of my life with a pointy thumb conversation starter, no one will ever know
about or remember my self inflicted wounds.
That is a proud tribute to your skills.
I am glad that I had the good fortune to be referred to your
office. I want to thank you for
developing this treatment approach. I
hope other physicians will adopt your approach as it is of great benefit to
patients like me.
Sincerely,
Andrew M.
