Caring For My Patients Comes First
The Regen-It Technique
The Way Things HAVE Been Done...

History of indications for surgical intervention:
  • Soft tissue amputations only (Type 1) have been treated with skin graft and/or granulating cover.
  • Soft tissue plus bone through the middle of the nail (Type 2) is treated by shortening of bone and skin graft, skin flap or a "VY" closure.
  • Soft tissue plus bone proximal to the nail (Type 3) is usually treated by disarticulation of the end of the finger
In all cases where bone is exposed the treatment involves shortening of the finger. The literature has well established the major complications to include neuromas, graft failure, loss of sensation and second surgery with second revision.

And NOW: The Regen-It Technique...

I have used my Regen-It technique on Types 1, 2 and 3 injuries with success.  The time frame for regeneration is approximately three months. The end result is no neuromas, no loss of finger length*, near normal sensation and good cosmesis.
*Finger length is greater than or equal to the length at the time of injury.

Statistics

A review of available trama statistics:
  • Indiana state industry - 5,500/year
  • U.S. industry statistics - 90,000/year (uncomfirmed)
  • Table saw injuries in the U.S. - 10,000/year
There are no statistics on snow blower, car door, etc. found.  A conservative estimate of qualifying injuries in the U.S. would be 100,000 to 150,000 patients per year.

It has been my experience that, given the choice, patients will elect for non-surgical methods over surgical.  The Regen-It technique can be done by a non-surgical physician.

Incentive
Minimum lost work time, mimimum disability and minimum compensation.

Future
It is possible to apply this technique and kit to any fingertip injury (such as a sprain or break) or amputation at any level not replantable.
